Well...Listening to Vienna's 88.6 for the past two years, it took me a few months (and a few germ...austrian language lessons) to realise that the broadcaster was not saying achtung achtung sex but acht und achtzig sechs :)

A guy in my army unit had been in Germany for a few years when I got there. He originally was in the northern part in Flemsburg(?) I think was the town. He married a woman from there. When he was transferred to Schwaebisch Hall, she said she couldn't understand the locals. Claimed Swabian was its own language.

For a local Austrian dialects are mostly understandable ;)
Tyrolean is funny but you can understand it if listening carefully.
Dialect from Vorarlberg is NOT understandable if they do not want you to understand.
